SESSION 1: INTRODUCTION
September 18, 2018
For the introductory session, the group filled out a pre-survey, established norms, and did an icebreaker activity. The group was instructed to take turns counting to the highest number possible, but if more than one person spoke at the same time, the group had to start over.
SESSION 2: WAYS TO STUDY (SUPERHERO VERSION)
September 25, 2018
Students were shown a PowerPoint that included clips of different superheroes (or Harry Potter characters) and asked how they might relate to good study skills (e.g. Ant-Man gets smaller -Â use abbreviations when taking notes). This was done to connect studying to something that interested the group.
SESSION 3: NOTE TAKING METHODS
October 2, 2018
Students were taught four ways to take notes. After discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each methods, students took notes on on these superhero passages from Mrs. Thomas's 'OWL'standing Class Blog
SESSION 4: ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS
October 9, 2018
In an organizational activity, group members were shown two identical backpacks. Two volunteers were instructed to race to find a piece of paper with an X on both sides.

When group members opened their backpacks, one was very organized, making it easy to quickly find the paper.

SESSION 5: TEST ANXIETY ACTIVITY

During this session, students watched a clip on negative self-talk and growth mindset. After discussing the video, group members completed a Caterpillars to Butterflies activity that I designed to aid students in conquering test anxiety and decrease negative self-talk
SESSION 6: LEARNING STYLES
October 23, 2018
Students determined their learning styles using an assessment from Kids2College. I also used a video to illustrate for students what each learning style looks like.
SESSION 7: TERMINATION
October 30, 2018
The group ended with a discussion of what students learned and what they plan to do moving forward. Members also took a post-survey. After completing the group, there was an average 15% increase in study skills self-efficacy as determined by student self-rating of study skills on a 1 - 10 scale. One student reported a 50% increase.
